Selaginella apoda, commonly known as the Meadow Spikemoss, is a delicate evergreen plant valued for its fine texture and rich green colour. It forms a dense, carpet-like mat of tiny, branching stems covered with soft, feathery fronds that cascade elegantly over the edges of containers or across terrarium surfaces. The foliage appears almost moss-like, with a fresh vibrancy that adds depth and texture to any indoor display. When grown in the right environment, it retains a lush, velvety finish, bringing a sense of natural calm and vitality to enclosed or shaded spaces.

Growing Conditions

Selaginella apoda thrives in humid environments with medium to bright, indirect light. It performs especially well in closed terrariums, where humidity remains stable and light levels are diffused. Filtered water or rainwater is ideal for maintaining its softness and colour. Temperatures between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius support continuous growth. It benefits from gentle airflow and a consistently warm setting free from draughts or sudden temperature shifts.

This species is naturally low-maintenance. Keep the soil moist at all times without letting it become waterlogged. Mist regularly to sustain humidity, particularly in dry indoor air. Trim any overgrown or faded fronds to preserve a tidy appearance. Feed lightly once a month during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. In terrariums, remove excess condensation and ensure the plant has enough space to spread evenly across the substrate.
